Peaking at the Right Time - Week 14 Training for Grindstone 100

TRAINING BLOCK FOR MY FIRST 100 MILER COMPARED TO MY FIRST 100k

This training block for Grindstone 100 has not looked anything like I imagined. I did 64 miles of running this past week. The most I’ve done since early June. I had planned on getting in several 100 mile weeks but that wasn’t what we were given.

When I look back at my training block for Looking Glass 100K I did over 1200 miles. Compare that to this block and I ran roughly 600 miles of running.

Just looking at mileage alone I would have to say I’m nowhere near as fit as I was last year. But we have to look at more than just running.

In my training block for Looking Glass I did little to no strength training and I wasn’t biking or hiking. Now if we look at this block I’ve been consistent in the gym at least once a week, sometimes twice per week training legs. I have been doing PT exercises 5x a week since late July. Core work 2-3 times a week. I’ve biked 735 miles and I’ve hiked with weight for 56miles.

That’s all training that can help with running a 100 miles. I’m just not sure how to compare that to the amount of running I did for my 100k. One things for sure, we’re going to find out.

PEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME

One things for sure, I’m fitter now than I was a month ago and that’s encouraging as we approach race day. I’ve done over 50 miles per week for the last four weeks and was able to get in some long days in the mountains.

Over the weeks I saw my paces improve on those hard long runs where I was getting near 6,000ft or more of elevation gain and loss and was considerably less sore than I was that first long run back.

My foot is continuing to get better each week and I’m very optimistic it won’t give me any issues on race day (fingers crossed).

If it does, then we will adapt and address it just like we will any other issues that arise on race day. I’m just happy to be healthy enough to toe the start line and race!!
